Check the Christmas date when your family is in two time zones

A plan to open presents at “8:30 on Christmas Eve” can mean two different things to relatives in different time zones. The same instant can fall on Christmas Day in another place. Start with the city or town where the celebration happens and its full local date and time. Then check the clock and calendar where the other person will be.

Agree on the celebration that suits your household first. This is a check for adults arranging that plan, not a suggested time for presents. Time-zone rules can vary within a country and change, so use named places and the date you actually mean.

Put two dates in the message

• Name the celebration place and the other person's place. “London” is clearer than “Britain”.
• Write the year, date and local time in the first place. If you use a 12-hour clock, add a.m. or p.m.
• Convert that instant for the second place, including its local calendar date.
• Ask another adult to check the conversion and compare it with your family's plan before sending it.

Two fictional December 2026 examples

These examples illustrate a date change; they are not proposed celebration times. Thursday, 24 December 2026 at 8:30 p.m. EST (UTC−05:00) in New York is Friday, 25 December at 1:30 a.m. GMT (UTC+00:00) in London. Thursday, 24 December at 5:30 p.m. PST (UTC−08:00) in Los Angeles is also Friday, 25 December at 1:30 a.m. GMT in London. In each case the two clocks describe one instant, but London has reached the next date.

Give everyone one clear version

Fill in the printable Christmas date check, then write both places, dates and times in the invitation. Leave private addresses and children's names off a shareable copy. Say “Thursday, 24 December at 8:30 p.m. in New York is Friday, 25 December at 1:30 a.m. in London,” rather than “8:30 on Christmas Eve”. Check current time-zone rules for your chosen date before relying on your conversion, and check again if either person travels.
